Maxine Burkholder
Biography
Maxine started drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil and machine sewing when she was eight. Art lessons followed, as well as a degree in Chemistry and every art course she could squeeze into her schedule. After college, she studied watermedia painting with William J. Ziegler (AWS) and printmaking with Margot DeWitt. She taught watercolor and drawing classes for 13 years and has since taught both jewelry and quilt making.
She has also been working with metals for over 30 years, creating one of a kind jewelry pieces in silver, gold, and other metals. Her creations are inspired by the wonderful stones she incorporates into the design.
In 2011 she started cutting her own stones in order to explore the amazing patterns that occur in nature. Since no two patterned stones are alike, each jewelry piece is unique. Now the weight of the stone collection balances the weight of the fabric stash.
“Mother Nature creates the Art. I just frame and present it”
Serious quilting began when she realized two things:
1. She could combine her loves of painting, drawing, and sewing into one mixed media art form.
2. Not all quilts have to go on beds.
Maxine has exhibited her work in numerous solo, group, and juried shows and has won awards in all her media.
“I love fabric and being able to play with colors and textures. Being able to paint on the fabric and draw with thread, combines two favorite creative modes. In Art Quilting, anything goes!
